Anime Movies « Thread Started on Jan 22, 2006, 6:13pm »
I think anime movies are a bit more profound than anime series'. If you have seen any good movies, which to be frank, I haven't seen but one, you can write a review here. I would like to watch more movies, so tell me what you liked.
Last Wednesday I saw a movie called Whisper of the Heart, which was created by the same studio Miyazaki works with. The movie is low-key and dramatic, with pretty much no action. The backgrounds and character depth are amazing, though. It's about a normal Japanese girl who likes to write, who finds this guy that she likes. He wants to become a professional violin maker and is really dedicated. Because she thinks she isn't good enough for him, she puts herself through a test, writing her first book. I found this movie to be the most inspirational movie I have ever seen, honestly. I highly reccomend it.
P.S. There is a film that is closely related to this one called The Cat Returns, which is newer and has more action/fantasy.

Sorry for the double post, but I just found out that, if you have cable, TCM (Turner Classic Movies) is playing 2 or 3 classic anime movies every Thirsday night, first in english, starting at 7:00PM then in Japanese in the early morning I believe. I'll be watching Pom Poko and Only Yesterday, and you can too if you want to check it out! EDIT: I have good news and bad news. Good news: It was a Miyazaki movie marathon. Bad news: It was only on this month, and now its over...
Eh, anyways. I saw both movies, and they were both pretty good. Only Yesterday is about a city girl who goes out to work on a farm because she really likes the lifestyle and the area. Meanwhile, she has these flashbacks from when she was 10 years old, which are interesting. Basically its the story of her discovering who she is. The movie was very well done and very realistic... Imagine a simple yet profound movie-- only done in anime. Pom Poko was great. It's about a bunch of raccoons (that change into cartoony raccoons when they aren't around humans) that are trying to save their forest from development. This movie was funny because it has a lot of 'little-known' facts about the Raccoons, and because of the Japanese perspective of these creatures. An old Japanese fairy tale tells of how Raccoons are masters of the art of transforming into any imagineable thing. Most of the movie is about the Raccoons trying to get rid of the humans by transforming into people, spirits, accidents and specters. Another Japanese depiction of Raccoons is that they have very large testicles, so I was kind of surprised to... see them... but apparently that's how they are to the Japanese. Anyways, this movie was awesome, especially the specter show they do near the end. And as you can guess, this movie is about how humans are destroying nature for their own selfish needs. Heh heh heh...

I just saw The Castle in the sky, not such a good one as some of the others I have seen, but I would suggest "Howl's Moving Castle" and of course " Princess Monoke" both Miyazaki films

Anything by Myazaki is pretty much a winner, considering that the guy's done pretty much everything. (Given that, maybe I should stop holding all of his Totoro hostage, they're always being harassed by the Pokemon, and they're beginning to smell.)

I heard somewhere that Miyazaki's films are constantly in the top 5 movies in Japan. I find that simply amazing. Over here anime gets overlooked because we have hollywood. I think anime movies, especially Miyazaki's, have way more moral value and whatnot than real movies.

I wouldn't always go that far, but yes many of his movies are MUCH better than the good movies here. but we do have some good stuff come through. Long live miyazaki, where will i get new entertainment from once he is died?

I watched the Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind movie from Miyazaki, which was good. However, I don't know what to reccomend because the movie lost points with me because it cut out about 3/4 of the story to fit it into 2 hours(there's just that much in the story), so after enjoying the manga I constantly thought of the movie in terms of what it left out. But if you don't read the manga, you'll miss out on an amazing story. But if you see the movie first then read the manga, you will be very confused by all the things that will be added in the manga. Even so, you should still watch it, though there are probably better ones.

I managed to finish the series while the whole thing was still on youtube, and overall the series is amazing, and probably the best anime I've ever seen. I really enjoyed the movie, though I kind of wish it had ended differently. I liked how they mixed it with our history, but I would rather have had less focus on the history in our world since it seems less interesting when we know how it will end. That's completely subjective though. Does anyone know if there will be a sequel, because they definitely left some space for the possibility.
